Alex had recently heard about a driving school, located in Greenland, and he decided that it sounded interesting enough to check out. He had told me about his plan before leaving, but I thought he was joking as its really difficult to imagine what a driving school would consist of on a big piece of ice. So, I laughed and just wrote it off as part of his quirky personality. It was only a week later that I realized that I hadn't heard from him, so I gave a ring to his house. His mom answered and we had our usual polite but brief and disinterested chit chat, after which she asked why I was calling considering that Alex had left town a few days earlier. 'Oh really?' I said, 'He didn't mention anything to me about leaving.' She commented that that was very strange, since he told me everything including things that he didn't even share with his family. Embarrassed, I asked where he had taken off to. Greenland, she said. Then it struck me. He had been completely serious and I had missed it entirely. He really had gone off to a driving school in Greenland. I still couldn't imagine it in the slightest, and even more couldn't imagine what would be so compelling to take him there to investigate and test it out. What a strange guy, I thought.

It was an agonizing two weeks wait before he returned, and before I could get any stories about what he had experienced there. He explained it all to me in about one breath, and he was like a kid on Christmas morning. Not only was it a driving school for him, it was the experience of a lifetime, and he claimed that he couldn't imagine ever topping it in this lifetime. He spoke of a ice skating auto, that not only had its own skates but also guided itself automatically across the ice. There was also a moped of sorts, in that it didn't have gears but only had two wheels which were endowed with spikes so as not to slide around. He explained that he couldn't exactly call what they were doing motoring, but that regardless what they were driving were still motorized. It was in this way that the company could claim itself as a driving school, and hence give the participants driving licenses at the end of the week.
