I remember when I first decided that I would quite like to learn to drive. It feels like so long ago, yet I still remember the process and all the things that I went through in order to acquire a driving license.
The very first step that I had to take was to get a list of all the driving schools that were local to my area. I needed to know who was offering driving instruction services where I was living. In addition it was important to me that I got value for money. This didn’t mean I was looking for someone who was cheap, but at the same time I didn’t want to be overcharged. I was fully aware that some driving instructors charged way over the odds to teach people how to drive and I just didn’t have enough money to throw away on driving lessons!
After spending a few days compiling a list of driving schools in my area, and calling up to see how much they all charged, I managed to choose an instructor who charged a reasonable amount of money and seemed to be rather friendly. Having a friendly instructor was important to me as I needed to be comfortable whilst trying to learn how to drive. In addition, the instructor I decided to learn from had worked with a number of different driving schools over the years, so I felt glad to know I had chosen someone experienced.
My first lesson was a little odd. I can remember being quite defensive about my ability to drive, or inability rather! I shouldn't have felt that way as I had never driven before, but I suppose I just wanted to be good at it from the word 'go' as I have always wanted to be the best at whatever I do. I soon stopped feeling that way however as my driving instructor was very nice indeed and made me realise that if I wasn’t the worlds best driver from the first lesson, it really was okay, and the whole point of taking lessons was so that I could learn!
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I am now a rather confident driver. In fact, I really enjoy driving and have been doing so for quite a few years now. I struggled a little at first and it took a little while for me to get my confidence. My advice to anyone who wants to start driving is to do what I initially did – get a list of all the driving schools in your area and then find out how much each of them charge. But don't do what I did on the very first lesson that you have – be too hard on yourself!
